As a result of the better prices and production of copper and gold, and because of the indicators showing that China will keep demanding copper, the mining companies have started to invest in technological improvements, facing a prompt recovering of the sector.
In 2016 our team was awarded the five projects that represent the largest investment in the last few years – US$ 100 million – in that sector, which demonstrates how interested Southern Cooper Corporation, our client, is in increasing its productivity and in raising its efficiency and management standards.
Following is a summary of the work we have been doing in two important mines in Peru.
Over US$100 million to increase the
productivity and to raise the efficiency and
management standards in the mining projects.
Employment generation for over 900
citizens from Tacna and Moquegua.
The two projects we are in charge of in Cuajone are part of the Facilities Technological Improvement Project
We are assembling a 1,80-meter-wide by 6-km-long mining conveyor belt (2,000 tonne equipment) to replace the internal train in current use. We will be able to lower the unit cost of each metric tonne of copper produced, and this will allow to transport the mineral of 8184 t/h with a 75% availability, which implies a 52% increase in transport.
We are implementing a 54-meter-diameter and 7.5-meter-tall tailings thickener, which will allow to increase water recovery in the plant by 25%. This equipment, added to the 4 thickeners the mine has, will allow to optimize the use of the installed capacity of the concentration plant.
In Toquepala we are in charge of three projects which, once finished, will allow to expand the mine processing capacity, from 60 thousand tonnes per day to 120 thousand tonnes daily.
We are doing civil works (20,000 m3 of concrete) and assembling structures (5,000 tonne of structural steel) of the wet area, in the second stage of the concentration plant.
We have been assembling the equipment (6,000 tonne equipment), piping (250 tonne of process and service lines), electricity (350 km of cables) and instrumentation (200 units) for the transport and crushing of mineral.
Equipment assembly (6,000 tonne equipment), piping (600 tonne of process and service lines), electricity (450 km of cables) and instrumentation (100 units) for the wet area.
Thanks to these projects we have been able to generate more employment for over 900 citizens, as well as to benefit local and national suppliers and thus, we have contributed to the local development in Tacna and Moquegua.
